With four-foot waves and higher tides, Huntington Beach became a playground for some of the world’s best SUP surfers and racers, this past weekend at the first stop of the 2013 US SUP Tour.

Saturday was prelim day with open racing and surfing and early heats of the Pro SUP Surf division, but on Sunday, the level stepped up with incredible surfing from Colin McPhillips and Mo Freitas, and, spectacular action from Matt Becker and Mo Freitas in the Technical Race.

Colin narrowly defeated Mo in the Surf Final, with big carving turns and it looked like Mo was tanked after his paddle battle in the race. Tommy Lloy was third with Dave Boehne in fourth.

The Technical Race was spectacular, with a course of just over four miles, featuring five transitions in and out of the surf. In the fourth lap of the course Mo was leading when he fell on an outside wave, letting Becker take the lead, which he held through the final three legs of the course.

In the end it was Mo Freitas and Sofia DeWolfe who took the overall combined race/surf title.

All eyes are now on Stop 2 of the US SUP Tour on May 17-19 in Seaside Heights, NJ.
