Weekend Primer: Winter Series Kick Offs, A SUPathlon and More

Just because the weather is cooling off doesn’t mean SUP events are slowing down. Exhibit A: this weekend. The next couple days are full of events from Fiji to Costa Rica and there’s a little somethin’ for everyone. The UK and SoCal winter racing series begin, the shores of Malibu, Calif. play host to a SUPathlon, and the 2013 Standup World Series kicks off in Namotu, Fiji. That’s not all, so check out the full list of events that are on tap this weekend:

2nd Annual Pacifico Paddle Challenge

St. Petersburg, FL
The Pacifico Paddle Challenge is back for it’s second year. The event will test the racer’s athletic ability with a beach run between course laps. Racers will paddle to the beach where they will complete a short beach run with paddle in hand, then re-launch their board and paddle the course of buoy turns. Events will include a 3-mile race, 5-mile race and a relay. Awards include cash prizes totaling $3,000, as well as $3,000 in other prizes. Hang around for the after party where there will be live music and sweet deals on Pacifico beer.

La Jolla Invitational

La Jolla Shores, Kellogg Park
The first race in the SoCal Ocean Racing’s Winter Series will offer a short course and long course off of La Jolla Shores. The 4-mile short course is open to all paddle craft and the 8-mile long course is limited to OC-1, OC-2 and surf skis. Race fee includes a plate lunch and those who pre-register will get a t-shirt.

WeSUP’s Winter Fun Race Series- Qualifier 1

Gylly Beach, Falmouth, UK
WeSUP’s Winter Fun Race Cup is about to kick off! It’s the single Fun Board only race series in the UK. The series is designed for all ages and skill levels, with a focus on fun. The Qualifier 1 course will be WeSUP’s famous ‘W’ course off Gylly Beach. Paddlers will have a running beach start and series of sprint paddles around 3 buoys. This year there is a twist to the course, which will be explained during race briefing, so don’t miss the pre-race meeting. WeSUP will also be continuing the awesome Fancy Dress Relay, so for those of you who want no part in competitive fun racing, this is an event for you.

Paddle Out Poverty

Ponce Inlet, FL
Four races and a fun paddle to promote job creation for those facing poverty in Haiti and Honduras. Races include 4-mile races for SUP and kayaks, as well as 1-mile races for SUP and kayaks, followed by a fun paddle. All events will be held on the intracoastal waterway and participants can rent boards and kayaks at the event location. There will be a silent auction and lunch (not included in race fee) following the races.

Wounded Warrior Project’s Day on the Water

Baby Beach, Dana Point Harbor, Dana Point, CA
Dana Outrigger Canoe Club is hosting Wounded Warriors Project for a day of fun on the water in Dana Point Harbor. Wounded Warriors and families can jump in a 6-man outrigger canoe together or try standup paddling in the protected waters while the sounds of Hana Hou Musicians serenades those hanging beachside.

Malibu SUPathlon

Malibu, CA
It’s like a biathlon, but better because it involves paddling. Run 7 miles then paddle 6 miles on SUP, prone paddleboard, or outrigger in this unique point-to-point event. All competitors must provide their own board/boat and drop off at the ‘transition zone’ during the specified drop off time. Shuttles will only be available prior to the race and all finishers will receive a beach towel and Hawaiian lei medal.

The 2013 Standup World Series kicks off in Fiji with one of the heaviest fields of international competition in SUP racing. Elite paddlers from around the globe will compete in sprint and long distance races, with cumulative scores determining the event winner and rankings for the following stop on the tour.
