The Standup World Tour to light back up in Surf City USA
After a long break since the last event in Ubatuba Brazil, Stop 3 on the 2013 Standup World Tour will bring the world’s best back to Surf City USA, as the race towards the 2013 World Title intensifies in front of California’s Surfing Capital at Huntington Beach.
Currently in the rankings lead after his win at Sunset, and fifth in Brazil, Kai Lenny will be looking to build on his lead at this all-important stop on the Tour, but this campaign will not be left unchallenged. 2012 World Champion Leco Salazar will be looking to build momentum after his win down in Brazil earlier this year, while California resident and 2012 World Title Contender Sean Poynter will be looking to turn it on in front of a home crowd at Huntington Beach to make his Title dreams a reality in 2013.
Hawaii continues to be a driving force on the World Tour
Behind these three leading athletes, the list of incredible talent on the Standup World Tour runs deep, with competitors coming from Hawaii, Brazil, Australia, Brazil, Europe and beyond, all hoping to take down the Champions at Huntington Beach and make their mark on the 2013 Standup World Tour Season. Names to watch out for are:
Zane Schweitzer from Maui – a stunning win in the wave pool in Abu Dhabi has given Zane the confidence boost he needed and he excels in the skate park like conditions on offer at Huntington Beach. He currently lies in ninth place overall.
Kody Kerbox has also been on an incredible roll this year, currently lying in 3rd overall after strong performances in Sunset and Brazil, as well as in the exhibition event in Abu Dhabi.
You also cannot count out the young phenom from Haleiwa and event winner in Brazil in 2012, finalist in 2013, Mo Freitas – he continues to show his incredible form wherever he goes this year and will be a name to watch out for in Huntington. Mo currently sits in sixth overall. Also, second place finisher in Sunset Beach Robin Johnston has competed at Huntington Beach more than any of the athletes and has the experience, mindset and the ability to take down the very best.
The Vaz brothers have proved themselves very dangerous
From Sunset Beach on Oahu’s North Shore, to Abu Dhabi, to at home in Brazil, the Vaz brothers from Rio de Janeiro have proved that they are dangerous regardless of the conditions. Coming into Huntington Beach, Caio is currently in second place overall behind Kai Lenny, and favors the beach break conditions found in Surf City USA.
Meanwhile Ian put on a phenomenal display in Abu Dhabi and demonstrated that he has what it takes to take on and beat the world’s best.
With one of the most fanatical countries in the world behind them, the cheers for these young Brazilians, together with their fellow countryman Leco Salazar, Carlos Bahia, Matheus Salazar, Bezinho Otero and many more may even be heard from the Pier….
Australia to make waves at Stop 3 on Standup World Tour
The Aussies are on fire at the moment on the Standup World Tour: Beau Nixon, Justin Holland, Dave Muir, Keahi de Aboitz and Jackson Close have all proved their incredible performance on Tour and will be looking to take casualties at Huntington Beach.
Also, watchout for the groms coming up through the ranks, with the likes of Kai Bates amongst others, so watch as the Aussies fly the flag and make their presence felt in Huntington Beach.
California Talent to step up and stand strong in Surf City
Remember to watch out for the local contingent in Huntington Beach: from Colin McPhilips who has always proved dangerous in beach break conditions, Dave Boehne and Tommy Lloy, to the Hughes Brothers, Rocky Mckinnon and many more – they will be looking to stand strong on their home turf.
The talent runs deep here at Stop 3 of the 2013 World Tour
The list goes on: from Noa Ginella, Benoit Carpentier, and Robin Johnston, to Casper Steinfath, the other young phenom from Tahiti Poenaiki Raioha and Tamil Martino from Peru, the field is stacked for this year’s Huntington Beach Pro and the action will be both intense and broadcast live to you at: WatermanLeague.com and SUPtheMag.com
But let’s not forget the Women stepping up to do battle
