Naish 8’10” vs. Starboard SUP 8’5”

1. Naish 8’10” Hokua
The Hokua range is Naish’s answer to performancestyle standup boards. Shaped by Harold Iggy, the 8’10” Hokua (wood veneer PVC-sandwich) has a narrow nose and accelerated V-shaped tail and a thruster ‘glass/bamboo fin configuration to allow lighter riders (up to 190 lbs.) to turn on a dime. The single concave bottom isn’t geared toward beginners, but allows enough standby stability for seasoned riders waiting for their set wave (8’10” x 28” x 4.25”, naishsurfing.com).

2. Starboard SUP 8’5” Pocket Rocket
Starboard’s Pocket Rocket is for ambitious surfers or “those who are into a quick learning curve,” says Starboard Sales Manager Scott Currie. All boards are made from epoxy construction with a lightweight EPS core, and the Tuffskin model also has a thin layer of ASA plastic for durability. With a quad fin setup and stinger shape, the board is a stable 30 inches wide, but tapers to the tail for snappy cutbacks and fast rail-to-rail transfers (8’5” x 30” x 4.13”, star-board-sup.com).
