The 2010 Whitewater Stand Up Paddling Championship will be held Memorial Day (May 31) in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. This one of a kind event will feature the world’s best river stand up paddlers displaying their paddling prowess on the snowmelt swollen Colorado River. This new and innovative competition promises to be fierce. Returning Men’s champion Dan Gavere and 2009’s second-place finisher (C4 Waterman Team paddler and owner of the Aspen Kayak Academy (www.aspenkayakacademy.com) Charlie MacArthur, will be battling it out with the country’s premier river stand up paddlers for the title. Also, some of Hawaii’s top standup paddlers will be traveling to the mainland for the event. Leaders in the river standup paddle revolution, event sponsor C4 Waterman (www.C4waterman.com), will be well represented at the comp with members of their SUP team coming to the Rocky Mountains to spread the aloha spirit while surfing on the Colorado River.
The event starts with a downriver race from Two Rivers Park in Glenwood Springs down to South Canyon. This furious whitewater 6-plus mile (approx) balancing act will feature a mass start with the fastest paddlers winning this segment of the championship. Next up is a new and exciting event called SUPCROSS. This event (run similarly to boardercross races on snow), features heats of competitors charging upriver then pealing into the current and battling it out downstream. To make the SUPCROSS a bit more technical, this all out sprint features an eddy turn at a C4 Waterman flag midway down the course.
The championship’s culmination will be a surfing contest on the world famous wave at the Glenwood Springs Whitewater Park ( pictured here):
Each competitor will get two or three 1-minute rides with the surfer’s best score being counted towards their final results. The champion(s) will be determined by a point system with scoring accrued during the 3 events. After the surf contest, the SUPers would head back to the Two Rivers Park for the award ceremony at the park’s stage and then its time to celebrate!
