A regular at a Honolulu surf break died on Wednesday evening after possibly receiving a fin cut to his thigh from his standup board, according to surfers on the scene.

Roy Ito, Jr., frequented Kewalo Basin surf spot “Straight Out” each evening prior to sunset with his SUP board, according to an article on Hawaii News Now. On Wednesday, the other surfers in the lineup saw him come out of the water and onto his board bleeding heavily. He was limp and unresponsive. The surfers worked together to tow him to shore where onlookers called 911.

Ito was pronounced dead after being taken to Queens Medical Center. An autopsy has been ordered by the Department of the Medical Examiner in Honolulu.

Deaths by fin cuts are surprisingly rare in the surfing world. The last one we found record of was in Newport Beach, Calif., in 1987.
