On Saturday, September 17th, Hennessey’s Taverns and the World Paddle Association (WPA) will host the World SUP and Paddleboard Championships in Hermosa Beach, Calif. The multi-race event is expected to include some of the world’s best Elite paddlers vying for the World Championship title.
The day will begin with the 4-mile Elite Qualifier race for standup paddlers that have not yet qualified through WPA-sanctioned races to compete in the Elite Race. Only the top three competitors of each board class will qualify for the Elite Race to be held later in the day (classes include the Stock, 14’ and Unlimited SUP).
Following the Elite Qualifier is the Fun Race for novice and non-competitive paddlers. The short 3-mile race will have Stock, 14’, and Unlimited Paddleboard classes as well as Stock, 14’, and Surf SUP classes.
The premier race of the day, the Elite Race, will be a challenging 7-mile course. The top three competitors in each age group will receive medals and the top three finishers in each board class will win cash prizes. Cash qualifying board classes are Unlimited, 14’, Stock and Women’s Stock for standup and prone paddleboard. First place competitors of each board class gets to walk away with a $1,000 cash prize, while second and third place competitors of each board class will receive $600 and $400 cash prizes.
