National Watersports Festival | June 2-4
The National Watersports Festival (NWF) takes place this year June 2-4 and brings together SUP, windsurf, kayaking and diving for the UK’s largest multi-discipline watersports event.
Now in its 11th year, the NWF will take centre stage at its new home of Rutland for a non-stop weekend of racing, clinics, parties, demo, ‘celeb’ teams riders and camping. If you do want to camp you need to hurry as ‘Festival Experience’ tickets are only on sale until May 28th.
The NWF welcomes around 10,000 visitors across the weekend and has regularly seen around 500 competitors, who annually make the pilgrimage to the festival, which is regarded as a mecca for watersport enthusiasts – whether you’re a beginner, intermediate or pro.
According to Allan Cross, events director: “The NWF is an event for the majority – the ordinary, intermediate ‘weekend warriors.’ An event that is non-elitist – open to all age groups, all abilities and all marques of equipment. We’ve always seen the event being about participation – where ‘the viewer becomes the doer’ and anyone can take part in non-intimidating, fun competitions. Most of all, it is an event where like-minded enthusiasts can share and celebrate their sporting passion in a full-on festival environment.”
So what is in store? SUP is taking center stage.
You can take part as an individual, team or club in 3k and 5k Technical Races, a Dragon Board Time Challenge, SUP Polo matches, Land Paddling, SUP Tug o’ War and SUP Yoga. There is an evening Adventure Paddle and Chill Out Paddle around Rutland Water, which is the largest manmade reservoir in Western Europe and set in 4,200 acres of beautiful countryside.
If you are looking to improve your technique, there will be free coaching sessions to join in. If you want to upgrade, there is a huge trade show, where you can compare and demo the latest kit and ask advice from the designers and team riders behind the brands.
Even if you or a family member have never tried the sports before, there are taster sessions in SUP, windsurfing, kayak and SCUBA diving (in association with PADI and Dive Rutland) and hovercrafting with Axeler8 hovercrafts!
The NWF is also delighted to be hosting the European Red Paddle Co Junior SUP Championships!
While the vision for the NWF has stayed the same, what has really changed is the scale of the festival. The trademark aspects of the rather modest 2006 event on Hayling Island remain; there is still a spectacular night event with floodlit freestyle tricks performed by some of the professionals, but this has ramped up a gear. This year, as well as jaw-dropping freestyle, expect a pyrotechnic, aerobatic display from a pair of gliders with wingtip fireworks and 20,000 LEDs reflecting on Rutland’s still, black waters!
Live music and partying to celebrate the day’s action on the water has always been an essential part of the social side of the festival. This year, Friday’s party will be headlined by local covers band The Atlantics, while on Saturday, expect “wild, breathtaking, exhilarating and high octane” action from The Houndogs! There will be award winning beers and ciders to refresh you, from local sponsors, The Grainstore Brewery.
Besides the attractions of the NWF, Rutland Water has much to offer in its own right. There are cycle and walking tracks, a zoo, children’s play areas, climbing wall and boat tours around the lake. It is truly a special place to visit and a perfect place for a watersporty weekend with your family, team or club!
The 11th National Watersports Festival will take place at Rutland Water on 2-4th June 2017. Join the rest of the NWF Community and make the NWF a ‘don’t miss it’ fixture on YOUR calendar!
