Blessed by good conditions, the Jay Race in beautiful Santa Cruz, Calif. went off with San Clemente’s Thomas Shahinian winning the long course while posting the best overall time of the competition (1:50). The Surtech Jay Moriarity Memorial Paddleboard Race honors the legendary Santa Cruz waterman who died ten years ago in a free diving accident in the Maldives.
The conditions were perfect,” Shahinian says. “You never know going up to NorCal. The winds were light and the course was perfect. The organizers did an awesome job. The race fee was affordable, the swag bag was awesome and the inflatable buoys made it super-easy to follow the course.”
Brian Stockdale finished second and Tom Gallagher rounded out the top three in the Unlimited. In the 14-foot class, Santa Barbara’s Matt Becker took top honors followed by Eric Starnes and Martin Sundberg.
On the women’s stock side, Morgan Hoesterey took top podium honors while Sky Robbins finished second and Marlayna McNeil finished third.
