These groms will be competing for $5,000 in prize money on Sunday, but they will also being helping with the clinics at the Standup for the Cure event on Saturday.
“It’s going to be a very exciting weekend in Southern California May 4th and 5th. We are so proud that the Performance Paddling Junior Pro participants will be joining Standup For the Cure on Saturday May 4th,” says Shawneen Schweitzer. “Our youth are our future and it is a great [representation] of the athletes we have in our sport. I’m honored they are amped and ready to volunteer at Standup for the Cure by teaching the sport they love to thousands of people while raising awareness to the important issue of breast cancer.”
Junior Pro invitee Kristi Page will come from Victoria, Australia on her first overseas trip to compete in the Junior Pro and volunteer at Standup for the Cure. “I can’t wait to help out with the Standup for the Cure clinics. Nothing makes me happier than being given such a great opportunity to pass on the passion and spirit of SUP to others,” Page said. “It’s been my dream for a long time now to be able to compete against some of the world’s best juniors and now I’ve finally got my chance. I have never been more excited,” Page added.
Judie Vivian of Standup for the Cureis looking forward to the 2nd annual event that brings breast cancer awareness and fundraising to the SUP community. “One in seven women locally get affected by breast cancer, and only 1 in 5 have health insurance,” explains Judie Vivian. “Along with fundraising to enable mammograms for women who have no insurance, and raising awareness of breast cancer to people of all ages, especially the younger generation, Standup for the Cure has the motto, ‘Have Fun and Save Lives.’
