Over 100 standup and prone paddleboarders headed out to Santa Cruz on Saturday to race at the 11th annual Surftech Jay Moriarity Memorial Paddleboard Race. The event drew in elite standup paddlers and friends of the late Jay Moriarity to remember the Santa Cruz waterman and compete in the rigorous 12-mile course.
Nearly 70 standup paddlers competed in 12’6, 14’ and unlimited board classes offered in the long course race. Competitors raced from Capitola Beach toward Steamer Lane around a buoy course for nearly 3 hours, with top SUP finishers coming in just shy of 2 hours. 10-time Molokai to Oahu champion Jamie Mitchell took the overall win, racing in the 14’ SUP board class. Mitchell finished the 12-mile course at 1:55:34 with Matt Becker (1:57:00) and Patrick Ohea (2:06:24) finishing second and third.
On the women’s side, elite paddler Candice Appleby won overall at 2:07:18, finishing fourth in the 12’6 SUP board class behind Benjamin Sarrazin (2:05:19), Keith Meter (2:06:38) and Austin Young (2:06:48). Alison Riddle and Jen Fuller took the second and third places for the women, with times of 2:15:53 and 2:16:59.
“I’m really stoked to win the Jay Race,” Candice Appleby said. “It’s an awesome race and great to be able to come to Santa Cruz to experience and be around all the people that love Jay and inspired him. Being part of the event is a blessing itself and a win is just the icing on the cake,” Appleby added.
The unlimited SUP board class, topped off with four competitors, including Tony Mueller (2:03:38) who took the win and finished third overall in SUP. Bill Saxton (2:21:39), Bill Sullivan (2:3653), and Buzz Hegerle (2:37:36) also raced unlimited SUP, placing second, third and fourth.
