Last weekend, hundreds of sailors, surfers, children, parents, legends, shapers and standup paddlers paddled out into the Pacific in Dana Point, California to celebrate the life of one the greatest ocean innovators of all time: Hobie Alter. Alter died of cancer on March 29 at the age of 80.
Alter was a legend of the watersports community. He was, in no particular order: inventor of the Hobie Cat, the most beloved sailboat of all time; innovator behind what would become the largest surfboard blank producer the surf industry has ever seen, Clark Foam; cultivator of a handful of the most influential surfboard shapers of all time (Muñoz, Hoffman, Yater); and early adopter in the standup craze. A true maker of history.
