Industry News: San Francisco’s Battle of the Bay and Expo

Mark your calendars for Oct. 29th’s Battle of the Bay SUP Race & Expo in San Francisco Bay, presented by Bluerush Boardsports. With a $5,000 cash purse and the opportunity to race on the famed bay, this is an event that cannot be missed.

The racing will be held at McNears Beach in Richardson Bay, just off San Francisco Bay, with multiple events, including races for Elite paddlers, Amateurs and kids. Elite paddlers will compete for the $5k purse on a 6-mile buoy course, featuring lots of challenging buoy turns to test paddlers’ skills. Amateur paddlers can race the 4-mile buoy course that will also have some challenging turns, or there will be a 2-mile race for kids and competitors racing on SUP surfboards. The first kid to cross the finish line will receive an Everpaddle SUP board, and other competitors can look forward to some awesome prizes too.

The relay race will be the final race of the day. The race is three laps around a one-mile course for 3-person teams with at least one female. Board classes included in the races are prone, 12’6 (stock), 14’, and Unlimited, although Elite paddlers must race 12’6 and prone paddlers must race Elite or Amateur. For bigger braddahs, there will be a Kahuna division, where males over 210 lbs. can race 12’6 for a cash purse.

A Manufacturer’s Expo will be setup during the day with the latest and greatest boards and gear in the SUP world. There will be gear demos, meet and greets with industry pros as well as paddling clinics with Chuck Patterson and Karen Wrenn to hone your SUP skills. Following the day of racing will be a party at the Marin Yacht Club. A costume contest will be held at the party, with a chance for racers (and guests) to win more. A portion of the event’s proceeds will go to pollution watchdog, Baykeeper, to help keep San Francisco Bay clean. – Shari Coble
