Stop number 2 and European leg of the Standup World Tour will once again take place on the northwest coast of France, in Brittany. From the 28th April – 6th May, the ocean sports mecca of La Torche will play host to the world’s very best standup paddlesurfers as they prepare to do battle for vital ranking points in the 2012 World Title Race and for the win on European soil.
Last year’s winner and 2x World Champion Kai Lenny will be looking to continue his good form following an impressive performance at Sunset that earned him second place. He will also be looking to secure his second win in France following a dominant performance in the La Torche Pro of 2011.
Frenchman Antoine Delpero Looking for Vengance
Number 3 overall in 2010 and 2011, Frenchman Antoine Delpero will be looking to repeat his 2010 victory at home in France this year at the Naish La Torche Pro.
With a recent win at the California stop of the Standup World Tour in Huntington Beach in 2011, but not as stronger start to the year as he would have liked, Antoine will be looking to put himself back in contention for the Title in 2012 and demonstrate to his home crowd that he has what it takes.
16 Year Old From Pont l’Abbe to Turn Heads
After winning the Na Kama Kai Youth event in France last year and advancing well through the Main Event, young Benoit Carpentier from Brittany, France showed his worth at Stop 1 of the 2012 Tour with a phenomenal 9th place finish in the giant surf that the event provided and amidst the most intense competition to date.
In front of his home crowd, Benoit will be looking to go further at the Naish La Torche Pro in 2012, as he will once again match up against the very best in the world, but this time back at his home break. Carpentier is one of the great talents of the future to watch out for…
Brittany’s Greg Closier Also a Strong Contender
Greg Closier, also local to the area will be looking to do damage to World Tour regulars, as he steps up to stake his claim at home for the Naish La Torche Pro. Greg had a great result in 2010 and 2011 in France, and also made it over to Huntington Beach for stop 4 of the 2011 Standup World Tour.
Denmark’s Young Hopeful Casper Steinfath to Represent
Another great young talent to watch out for is Casper Steinfath from Denmark. Casper shows great promise for the future, with a great result here at La Torche in 2011, and then appearances at both Tahiti and Huntington events.
Casper is the leading force for the sport in Scandinavia and is also one of the most promising European athletes in both surfing and racing. Watch out for this young talent from Denmark.
Brazil to be Well-Represented in European Leg
Between the formidable Leco Salazar who finished in 2nd overall in 2011 and 2nd place here in France and the Vaz brothers, in particular Caio Vaz who finished 5th and 7th respectively in his first two contests on Tour, not to mention Carlos Bahia whose semi final finish in 2011 turned heads, the Brazil contingent is frothing with talent.
Leco will be looking to make his presence felt here in 2012 and Caio will be looking to consolidate on his impressive start to the year with another great result in France. One thing is for sure, the Brazilians have consistently proved exceptionally strong in beachbreaks, so watch out…..
Peyo Lizarazu: Always a Force to Be Reckoned With
The Basque Peyo Lizarazu is always a force to be reckoned with, regardless of the conditions and no matter how fierce the competition.
Coming of an impressive 3rd place finish at Sunset, with his previous result before that, a win at the Sapinus Pro in 2011, Peyo’s reputation precedes him and will be there to stake his claim at home in France, with a Title Race of the kind we witnessed in 2010 between him and Kai Lenny a real possibility. Stay tuned…..
Competition Will Be Fierce
One thing is for sure, the competition will be firece, across the board, as the very best in the world prepare to do battle on European Shores for stop 2 of the Standup World Tour.
