Weekend Primer: An SUP Summer Kicks Off

Summer is officially here and this first weekend is just a taste of what to expect for the next few months. Get stoked paddlers, because this is going to be the best SUP summer yet. Here’s what’s on tap for the next few days:

Gunnison River Festival Extravaganza
Gunnison, CO
Friday, June 22 – Saturday, June 23
Join the celebration of river and stream activities at the Gunnison River Festival Extravaganza this weekend. Activities include a community raft parade, competitive raft race, freestyle kayak competition, the raft rodeo, standup paddling and much more.

International SUP Race
Namur, Belgium
Friday, June 22 – Sunday, June 24
Race, cruise and demo equipment at the International SUP Race. Meet fellow paddlers at the Meet You Paddle, compete in the European Channel race, or enjoy cocktails and live music. Demo’s will be held throughout the weekend and a team race, followed by awards will end the weekend.

Adirondack SUP Festival
Lake Colby, Saranac Lake, NY
Friday, June 22 – Saturday, June 23
The festival is packed with events, including short (3-mile) and long (6-mile) course races, a recreational SUP, clinics with Werner Paddle’s Danny Mongno, novice sprints (1/2-mile), fun races, a tandem race, and even a paddler and pooch race. There will also be demos, an obstacle course, a guided SUP tour, and an informational class with Hobie’s Nick Yunker to learn how to choose the right SUP.

11th Annual Surftech Jay Race
Capitola Beach, Capitola, CA
Saturday, June 23 – Sunday, June 24
A 12-mile and 2-mile course in memory of Jay Moriarity with proceeds benefitting the Santa Cruz Junior Lifeguard program. There will also be relays, a kids paddle and after party at the Crow’s Nest in Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor.

SUP Splash Race Series #2
Lake Lanier, Gainesville, GA
Saturday, June 23
Get out to the second race in a series of eight across the south. Race the 7.75 Elite Division course or compete in the shorter 3-mile Recreational Division. There will be a fun kids race, demos, and tons of other activities available after the race at nearby Lake Lanier Islands Resort, including horseback riding, zip lines, and a water park.

Paddle 4 People
Miami, FL
Saturday, June 23
An event for experienced and new paddlers in Miami. Experienced paddlers can race the 7-mile course and newbies can try the 4-mile course, both circling the Venetian Island. Proceeds benefit Adoptogether

SUP ‘n Surf Festival
Lake Michigan, Sheboygan, WI
Saturday, June 23
SUP and surf on Lake Michigan this Saturday. A 3-mile recreational course and 6-mile Elite race will be held with an open surf contest to finish the day off. There will also be free SUP demos and lessons the entire day.

The Pura Vida Ride Paddle Battle
Playa Danta, Costa Rica
Saturday, June 23
Race and raise money for La Paz Community school this Saturday. SUP races include the 9km distance race, 4km sprint race and a 1km family race. There will also be music, pickup beach volleyball, slack line challenges and food.

Kalamalka Classic SUP Festival
Vernon, British Columbia
Tuesday, June 19 – Sunday, June 24
Lots of SUP fun for everyone at the Kalamalka Classic. The remaining days of the festival include a clinic with Norm Hann, a Surf/SUP movie night, the Sip and SUP Sunset paddle complete with wine and music, short and long course races, sprints, grom relays, dinner and entertainment.
