This spring, SUP magazine Editor Joe Carberry accompanied some of the world’s best standup paddlers on a surf expedition to Indonesia. They got waves, they explored the Mentawais Islands’ little-known corners, but most importantly, they got to know each other on a personal level. Above all else, in this game we call standup, it’s about the people you meet. Each athlete on the trip brings a beautiful perspective to the sport.

“It’s crazy,” says Adam Crawford of Dana Point Calif., who, 10 days ago, was flown out to New York City along with his wife to appear on the Today Show to talk about the now viral YouTube video that he, his SUP, and an 80-plus foot blue whale appear in. “They put us up in a nice hotel right in Rockefeller Center,” he says. “Right across from the studio.”
