Frames: Peyo Lizarazu

Each winter, the best standup surfers in the world gather on Oahu for the Stand Up World Tour’s Sunset Beach Pro. Because of its shifty nature, Sunset lends itself well to paddling as athletes have to navigate an extremely large playing field. Here, Peyo Lizarazu—a native of the French Basque Country and one of the Tour’s most consistent competitors in early years—flies down a Sunset Beach wall, a difficult task for goofy footed standup surfers because of the wave’s large, fast sections. Sunset (where the first Eddie Aikau event was held in 1984), has been an inspiration for innovative craftsman in the sport such as locals Pat Rawson and Robin Johnston.
