From the Mag: Jamie Mitchell Analyzes His Fijian Bomb

We’re pretty proud of SUP magazine’s Fall edition. One of this issue’s cover blurbs reads, “Art in Performance.” It may as well read, “The Art of Play.” Because the athletes featured inside artfully play in the oceans and rivers of the world while wielding board and paddle. Aside from Mitchell, fellow Aussie Justin Holland, Sean Poynter–currently ranked number one on the Standup World Tour–and Southeastern paddler Michael Tavares grace the pages of our performance gallery.

In this special audio flipbook, we bring Mitchell’s mag spread to life as he talks about catching several giant, Tavarua tubes after working water safety for the ASP’s Fiji event this summer–which saw some of the most epic conditions ever for a World Championship Tour contest. After looking after tour vets like Kelly Slater (check him out peering over the ledge), Taj Burrow and Owen Wright, Mitchell got his turn in the lineup. Click play on the audio file, then scroll up and enlarge the flipbook to enjoy full screen. Longtime SUP mag photographer Tom Servais’ photos have never looked better.

Be sure and pick up the Fall issue at a newsstand near you to read about desert adventurers and a generation of young Maui paddlers–all of whom are geniuses at making art out of play.
