Felipe Hernandez put on a dominant performance yesterday in the Trials component of the Huntington Beach Pro Grand Slam presented by Starboard. Leading a strong field of Mexican contenders in Surf CIty USA, Felipe consistently powered his way through the rounds to make it through to the Final. When it counted, Felipe pieced together a strong heat to take the win in the Trials on Day One of the Huntington Beach Pro.
In second place, Brandon Rambo also put on a consistent display of performance surfing throughout the day and thoroughly deserved his second place in the Trials, as well as his place in the prestigious Main Event here at the Huntington Beach Pro Grand Slam. Local to Southern California, Brandon will be have the home ground advantage and home crowd behind him going into the Main Event.
Josh Riccio, originally from Florida, but now a Maui resident, demonstrated his strength in the surfing discipline of SUP to compliment his strong finish in the AC Open World Series Racing in San Francisco a couple of weeks ago. As a strong all rounder, Josh will be a name to watch out for moving forward on both the Standup World Tour and Series and is clearly benefiting from the breeding ground for talent that Maui has proved itself to be.
In 4th place, an ecstatic Geovani Cervantes Peres not only made the final but succeeded in his goal of making the Main Event, something he was committed to do as he initiates his career on the Standup World Tour. He experienced it all for the first time back in Brazil in 2012, and has come back stronger and ready to take on the very best in the world. He is definitely someone to watch out for and another strong Mexican finisher here at this spectacular event in Surf City USA.
