The Italian Championships wrapped up earlier this month with the series’ fourth stage, the SUP Cup Beach Race, a 3-star event in the European SUP Association (EuroSUPA) racing circuit and an Italian Federation of Surfing event. The sprint race brought some of the fastest European racers to San Cataldo, Italy to battle for cash prizes and points toward the overall EuroSUPA Beach Race ranking.
Competitors and event-goers faced a blustery day that only seemed to worsen, forcing race officials to postpone the race start. As the wind continued to blow at 18 knots, the race officials had no choice but to make changes to the 8-kilometer sprint slalom course, slightly decreasing the distance between the six buoy turns.
Leonard Nika of Rome started the race off with a lead that quickly led to a first-place overall finish ahead of Fabrizio Gasbarro Paul Marconi and Davide Ionico. Silvia Mecucci finished first in the Women’s division, with Roberta Mariani, Anna Occhiogrosso and Paola Perrone finishing second through fourth, respectively.
