This Hungarian transplant has been in the SUP scene for just over a year, but Krisztina Fazekas Zur is no newbie to competitive racing. With multiple World Titles in kayaking and Olympic aspirations, Krisztina is one ripped lady that is sure to make an impact on standup paddling as well.

I’ve been in the ocean my whole life. I learned how to standup paddle here on Maui when Laird (Hamilton), Dave Kalama and Loch (Eggers) were down at Ho’okipa with their huge standup boards and they let me go out at the point. I remember catching my first wave and being hooked. I was 9 or 10.

If you think stepping out of your comfort zone is camping at San Elijo or San Onofre State Beach, try the Amazon. Mariko’s thin Japanese-Hawaiian ankles have become swollen kankles with bug bites covering the entire bottom portion of her legs. Mine aren’t much different, despite the fact that we covered ourselves with 98 percent DEET. Chase counted the bites on my upper right arm alone: 53.
