Neenah, Wisconsin: Urban Paddle Guide
When you think of SUP, you may not think of Wisconsin but we have beautiful Midwest scenery and many rivers and lakes just ready for you to explore. I live in northeast Wisconsin where pristine rivers flow in and out of stunning lakes. Our culture here derives from our love for the water.
In Neenah, Wisconsin we have the wonderful Riverside Park which is encompassed by a peninsula jutting out along the Fox River into Lake Winnebago. The park hosts outdoor concerts, fireworks, family fun nights and of course tranquil getaways from the city. Just down river sits the ever-bustling downtown where cute boutique shops are lined with specialty restaurants for all tastes. A number of well-kept pubs are scattered throughout the landscape close enough to still feel the great lake breezes.
A short paddle to the north end of the lake will bring you to one of the best watering holes in the area, Waverly Beach. This bar and grill has been an icon in the area for years. A lake-front patio with an amazing tiki bar allows you to unwind and relax with your toes buried in the sand. It is simply breathtaking to watch as the sun falls below the tree line and the cool breezes begin pushing in, reminding you that you actually aren’t in the tropics.
The fishing is great here too; anglers come from all over to experience what Lake Winnebago has to offer. Boaters aren’t used to seeing someone fishing on a SUP so I get a lot of weird looks! The best part about fishing on a SUP here is the ability to maneuver into spots that boats and shore fishermen can’t reach.
What really makes this area truly great are the people. I’m trying to establish a paddle culture here. We’ve been late to catch up but when folks see me on my board, they’re quick to ask what it’s like and where can they get one! I’m proud to be a part of such an amazing sport and want to give back to my community by leading free paddleboard lessons from the parks nearby my home. Everyone should have the chance to experience SUP!
