Paddler’s View: Standup Paddling Virginia’s Russell Fork Gorge

If you’re wondering what it’s like to take your SUP down a river, this one’s for you.

Deep in the backwoods of Virginia and Kentucky runs an extremely technical, rapid-riddled gorge called the Russell Fork. It’s a famous whitewater paddling destination, but because its five rapid sections usually run between Class IV/V (aka extra gnar gnar) it’s not necessarily a famous standup paddling destination. But when the flows are right, Jack Nelson and his river SUP crew can be sited jamming down rapids and eddies of the Upper Russell Fork Gorge.
