Puerto Rico’s San Juan SUP Cup

Vamos a Puerto Rico? If you’re in the region, you should be there for Paddle Royal’s San Juan SUP Cup, this weekend, Oct. 29 and 30. The two-day event will bring out the top SUP racers from the Caribbean for over $15k in cash prizes and myriad scenic courses.

The San Juan SUP Cup will feature three racing classes with multiple board divisions and seven different courses ranging from .4 miles up to 8 miles long. Over 200 competitors are expected between the three classes, which include the Bad Ass (Elite), Weekend Warrior, and Keiki (kids). Bad Ass paddlers will have the option to compete on 14’ or 12’6 and Weekend Warriors will race on 12’6 boards.

Bad Ass paddlers can look forward to an 8-mile race on Saturday that begins in Condado Lagoon. The course takes Bad Ass competitors under the Dos Hermanos Bridge and out to the open ocean, where the fleet will race downwind along the northern coast of San Juan. Competitors will race past the 500-year-old El Morro Castle and into the protected San Juan Bay, before heading upwind back to the lagoon for a beach finish.

Weekend Warriors will compete in the crystal clear waters of Condado Lagoon for three miles. The intermediate-level course will have the racers crossing under multiple bridges before running up the beach to the finish. Following the Weekend Warriors race will be a fun relay race for Bad Ass and Weekend Warriors, as well as an SUP event for kids. There will also be a raffle, awards and random prize distribution before the Who’s a Bad Ass Happy Hour begins on the beach. As Happy Hour concludes, competitors and spectators can head over to Mango’s Cafe for videos of the day’s action and discounted meals and drinks.

Short races fill Sunday’s schedule with all courses taking place in Condado Lagoon. The second day of racing includes the Marina Sprint (1.1 miles), Baldorioty Dash (.8 miles), El Perro Bites (.5 miles), and the Condado Plaza Slalom (.4 miles). Sunday evening will be good times with Happy Hour at the beach and an awards banquet at SUP Cup’s host hotel, the beautiful Conrad Condado Plaza. —Shari Coble
