Conditions were a few hairs short of insanely massive yesterday afternoon at Ocean Beach, San Francsico, so organizers of the Standup World Tour called for a layday on Day 1 of the waiting period for the 2016 Final, the first-ever Red Bull Heavy Water. The combination surf-distance race from Ocean Beach around Land’s End and under the San Francisco Bridge is intended to showcase the extreme athleticism of today’s top SUP athletes in world-class-gnarly Northern California conditions. With better swell forecast for the alternate day of the waiting period—today—yesterday the world’s fastest male paddlers found themselves facing a contest on hold and a free day in San Francisco. By the looks of it, they spent it well.
