The Wednesday Voice: Vancouver Island’s Catherine Bruhwiler

The Bruhwiler family helped put the small Vancouver Island town of Tofino on the international surf map. Growing up on the exposed west coast in this rugged timber and fishing community, the Bruhwilers took advantage of the fact that, “there’s always waves.” After years with endless sessions to themselves, the family of pro surfers, which includes brothers Sepp and Raph, has seen the town explode as Canada’s premiere surf destination. Now Catherine is at the standup forefront, not only introducing SUP paddling to the surf lineups the right way, but also tapping the sport’s limitless touring potential in the island-pocked region through her Tofino Paddle Surf outfit. SUP magazine senior editor Dave Shively recently caught up with Catherine after experiencing typical Tofino February surf conditions with her: sideways rain, 35-knot offshore winds, and overhead waves.
