Skookumchuck Narrows is home to a wave like none other. It sits at the junction of the Pacific Ocean and the Sechelt Inlet on British Columbia’s wild and wooly Sunshine Coast, and with the turn of every tide, water funnels ferociously across the shallow reef there and creates a phenomenal standing wave. Scoring that wave in good conditions takes a lot of strategy and just as much luck, and venturing the long haul to get to Skook is always a bit of a gamble. But, if you do happen to score Skook in proper conditions, you’re in for what will likely be the longest, most unique ride of your life. Point and case: Spencer Lacy’s three-minute ride in overhead, glassy conditions from recent session he scored at Skook. Says Lacy, “It was the best paddling experience of my life.”
