The 2010 Ventura Paddle Surfing Championships kick off this weekend, Oct. 15 – 17, in Ventura, Calif., and will feature the first ever C-Street Sup Surfing Challenge.

The contest, officiated by ASP certified judges, will be held "Up top" at C-Street just east of the Ventura River Mouth. With a point break that works from 1' to 10' plus, C-Street is a great location for epic SUP Surfing.  At about a mile long, there are plenty of peaks along the cobble point.

Even though the SUP Challenge is new this year as part of the Wave Ski Nationals, the registration forms came pouring in.

"The response was overwhelming. I was sold out in a week," says event organizer Brian Kuszmar. "Originally I made a limit of 32 SUP spots, but I up'd it to 40. I couldn't say no to that many people."

Expected competitors include ultra-waterman Chuck Patterson, longboard extraordinaire, turned standup Sensei's Tommy Lloy and Collin McPhillips and young guns Zane Kekoa Schweitzer and Sean Pointer. Age divisions include Junior, Senior, Master, Legends, and a Womens class and will follow ASP rules.

There's also a vendors area for spectators to enjoy and check out all sorts of paddlesports goodies including SUPs, wave skis and surf kayaks.

After the enthusiastic reaction from the SUP community, Kuszman wants to expand the SUP Challenge to a bi-coastal championship. "My goal is to have the championship on both coasts, and switch each year, to keep things fair and different."

With the explosion of SUP events everywhere, it seems any additions would be welcomed with open arms.
