Rainbow Sandals Gerry Lopez Battle of the Paddle Hawaii
DATE: June 12-13 2010
TIME: 9:00 a.m. June 12 Opening Ceremonies
LOCATION: Ft. DeRussy/Duke Kahanamoku Beach, Oahu, HI

Staged at historic Duke Kahanamoku Beach at Ft. DeRussy, June 12-13, the Battle of the Paddle is more than an ordinary paddle race. For the sport’s top paddlers, The Elite Race, is a championship styled SUP circuit race that offers the sport’s largest cash purse of $25,000. This year, the former invite only Elite Race is open to all.

There will be an Open Age-Group Race, relay races, and kids races. At the last Battle of the Paddle in California, the Open Age-Group Race had the largest SUP field ever assembled—over 390 paddlers. The Hawaii race is promising to be even bigger, so come and be a part of history in the making.

New to standup paddling? Check out the SUP Expo. Meet the world’s best shapers and manufacturers and check out this summer’s hottest designs/innovations. There will be a rainbow of boards and paddles available for you to trial free of charge.

Immerse yourself in the local culture and community. Kanalu will be on site shaping ancient style surfboards and providing cultural education and a surfboard history exhibit. Na Kama Kai will also be there with their ocean awareness program, children’s activities and organizing kids SUP races & relays throughout the weekend.

Everyone who enters The Battle of the Paddle Hawaii will receive a pair of Rainbow Sandals, event T-shirt, lunch and cool event swag. A special welcoming party and aloha concert will be hosted by Quiksilver on Friday evening, June 11, featuring local musicians. Event proceeds will directly benefit the Hawaiian Community.

Whether you’re racing for the prize or just want to get your feet in the waters of SUP for the first time, The Rainbow Sandals Gerry Lopez Battle of the Paddle Hawaii is the perfect way to experience the rich tradition of Hawaii’s original surf lifestyle.

Visit for more information. The Rainbow Sandals Gerry Lopez Battle of the Paddle California (2009 Elite race pictured here) is scheduled for Oct. 2-3, 2010.

Southern California SUPers will also want to put another upcoming Rainbow Sandals event on their calendars:

The King and Queen of Dogpatch will be held May 8, 2010 at San Onofre State Beach. This is the second year of this raucous and hilarious standup paddleboard surf contest that directly benefits the San Onofre Foundation.

Come join the best standup paddleboard surfers from California and Hawaii to surf it out for the King and Queen crowns. Last year (2009), John and Manya Clark of San Clemente wore awarded King and Queen crowns. The surfing champions were Noah Shimabokura (Carlsbad, CA) and Candace Appleby (San Clemente/Hawaii).

“The event celebrates our favorite local SUP break, Dogpatch, and it’s a chance for us to do something nice for the beach through the San Onofre Foundation” says Rainbow Sandals owner Jay “Sparky” Longley.

The King and Queen of the Dogpatch SUP surf contest is an open event with men & women novice and advanced division. Surfers in this contest have to display more than pure surfing and paddling ability. Showing panache and aloha in their style is just as important. Finalists in each division will receive royally commemorative awards and an overall king and queen will be crowned. The event takes place May 8 with the first heat in the water at 7:00 a.m.,
