Safe SUP Choices: Dress For Immersion

Standup paddling is all fun and games, until it's not. The water—whether ocean, river, lake or pond—can be dangerous and always deserves respect. To that end, our team at SUP magazine has been working hard in partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard to bring you this first episode in an ongoing series of safe-paddling reminders. Yes, we've had a bit of fun with it but it's because we need to catch your attention to make a few points. Because, all kidding aside, too many standup paddlers are drowning—and those deaths could be avoided. So take a minute to enjoy, then take a minute to think and then make the right choices next time you hit the water. They can make all the difference.

In this installment of Safe SUP Choices presented by the US Coast Guard, we highlight the importance of dressing for immersion. Hypothermia is more invasive than most assume, and even the best paddlers get dunked in cold water at times. When they do, they best be prepared for the water temperature, whatever it may be. Always dress for success.
