Michael Tavares is a river fixture: he’s a certified kayak instructor, a downriver racer and a freestyle competitor. When he discovered SUP he transferred those skills over and quickly became a strong presence in freshwater standup. These days, Tavares can be found on rivers throughout the Southeast and the Rockies spreading the SUP gospel. In this video, he dissects the skills needed to start river surfing, from breaking through the eddy line to falling technique to swimming out of the main current.
