Here at SUP magazine, we always recommend using a quick-release leash or no leash at all when running whitewater. The video above shows you why.

A leash is an important tool, but on the river, it can be a fatal if used improperly. Never wear your leash on your ankle or knee on the river. If it caught on a submerged tree or rock, you may not be able to reach the velcro cuff to release it. A quick-release system attaches at your waist and allows you to escape in emergency situations.
