The 2017 Red Bull Heavy Water lived up to the events name with double- to triple-overhead surf and the world’s best male paddlers battling through the waves on the 7.5-mile course. The showing was one of the most brutal spectacles in our sport to date, with more than a few broken boards and some of the world’s best paddlers washing up on Ocean Beach defeated. In the end it was Red Bull team paddler Casper Steinfath who found his way through the surf and around Land’s End, into the bay and across the finish line in San Francisco Bay to claim the $20,000 first-place prize!

Behind Steinfath a dark horse story emerged as 17-year-old Starboard paddler Ryan Funk showcased his mettle in the massive surf and displayed incredible stamina and downwinding prowess on the bumps of San Francisco Bay to earn second-place. Rounding out the top-three was veteran standup paddling champion Travis Grant.
