APP World Tour | Maui Pro-Am Kicks Off Today!

Saturday, March 11, North Shore, Maui — The world's best standup paddle athletes are poised on Maui's North Shore for the Maui Pro-Am—the second stop on the newly formed APP World Tour and the opening race event of the 2017 season. The action kicks off this morning at 11am HST (1pm PST) with Sprint races at Ho'okipa Beach Park, and continues Sunday with the Distance race on Maui's legendary downwind stretch, the Maliko Run.

World-class competitors facing off in a world-renowned arena makes for an impressive spectacle, and the APP World Tour is bringing it to you LIVE via the event's real-time webcast at SUP magazine digital editor Mike Misselwitz is on the scene, and will be bringing you live updates via Instagram and Facebook @SUPthemag. The 2017 Maui Pro-Am features three divisions: the World Tour ($45k prize-purse), the Qualifier Series ($5k prize-purse) and the AM Age Group Racing (Awards & Trophies), as well as Youth Team Racing at Kanaha Beach Park. With today’s forecast calling for ample swell and mild conditions, Maui's North Shore stands to provide the ultimate arena for paddle surfing's best to showcase the immense progression of their sport.

When the last paddler crosses the finish line Sunday afternoon at Kanaha Beach Park, the fastest overall male and female contenders will be crowned champion. Directly following the competition, the APP World Tour will host lunch along with an awards ceremony and celebration featuring live musical performances from Hawaiian icon Paula Fuga, Ekolu Kalama and friends.

Saturday 11th March:

Saturday's racing will feature the APP World Tour Sprint Racing at Ho'okipa Beach Park, kicking off at 11am HST (1pm PST) with a LIVE webcast on Saturday's racing will feature World Tour athletes only, providing a spectacular viewing experience on site and online for the world to watch. Here is the schedule for Saturday's events:

  • 10am: Check in for APP World Tour Sprints
  • 11am: Sprint racing starts
  • 7pm: Movie screening at Rock & Brews

Sunday 12th March:

Sunday's racing will provide something for everyone, from youth and AM Age Group racing, to World Qualifier Series and World Tour competition on the legendary and iconic Maliko Downwind Run. Festivities at Kanaha Beach will add to the experience on Sunday afternoon with live music featuring Paula Fuga and guests, lunch and entertainment. Here is the schedule of events:

  • 9am: Youth Team Racing at Kanaha Beach Park
  • 10am: Paddlers check in opens at Maliko Bay
  • 12pm: Race Course Safety Briefing at Maliko Bay
  • 1pm: Staggered start for all divisions of racing at Maliko Bay
  • 2pm: Lunch opens
  • 3pm: Awards and Live Music by Paula Fuga and friends
  • 8pm: After Party at Rock & Brews
