Yesterday dawned with clean conditions, and perhaps a slight drop in swell, but still some great conditions for the continuation of the Main events for both Men and Women. Here is a breakdown of what happened and highlights will go live in the morning.
Kai Lenny (Naish) from Maui, Hawaii got off to a great start, posting high scores in his opening heat of Round 3 and going on to score the highest heat total of the contest so far in his Round 4 heat of a 18.6 out of 20. His explosive style met with the continuously changing peaks just south of the pier at Huntington Beach in the creation of a real spectacle. He will be first up tomorrow morning at 8am PST, as Round 5 will get underway, after which we will adopt a man on man format from the quarters onwards.
Also putting on a great show once again today, was the local wildcard, Daniel Hughes from Huntington Beach, CA. He proved his worth in front of the home crowd and advanced through 2 fiercely contest heats (Rounds 3&4) to advance on to Round 5 alongside Kai Lenny. Daniel will be back in action again tomorrow morning when competition resumes at 8am PST.
Ian Vaz (Art in Surf) from Brazil slashes his way to an important win in Round 3 and then scrapes through in Round 4 to continue his event campaign here in Huntington Beach. Ian’s style of surfing shows power and commitment and his motivation to take on the world is clear. He will be someone to watch out for tomorrow morning when competition resumes.
Sean Poynter (Starboard) from the Mainland US has a challenging Round 3 heat, but makes it through, but makes no mistake in Round 4, convincingly earning his place in Round 5 and keeping his Title hopes alive for 2013. Having come so close in 2012, Sean will be a man on a mission through the second half of 2013 as it all comes down to the wire here on the Stand up World Tour. With him, Alexis Deniel from France has been having an amazing event so far and continues to blaze through the heats here in Huntington Beach.
Leco Salazar from Brazil dominates both his heats to advance onto Round 5 today, putting on the kind of performance that we have come to expect from this Champion and following on from his win in Brazil back in May. Accompanied by his brother who has made his presence felt these past few days here in Surf City USA (despite going down in Round 4), Leco is looking strong coming into the final stages of Stop 3 on the 2013 Stand Up World Tour.
Zane Schweitzer (Starboard) from Maui, Hawaii has been on fire this week, dominating every heat he has contested from the start. Despite a strong challenge in the form of Mo Freitas (Focus SUP/Body Glove) in Round 4, Zane advanced through to Round 5 (along with Mo) and will be back in action tomorrow morning just south of the Pier.
In a dramatic last heat of the day, there was a double interference call for both Colin McPhilips from the mainland US and Poenaiki Raioha (Naish) from Tahiti, leading to disqualification for both athletes as a result. This left the playing field clear for Caio Vaz (Art in Surf) and Guillermo Cadena from Mexico who have both been showing moments of brilliance this week to advance through to Round 5.
In the women’s division, standouts for the day were once again Caroline Angibaud from France and Candice Appleby from right here in southern California in the top half of the draw, but also advancing, current ratings leader Nicole Pacelli from Brazil.
In the bottom half of the draw, Izzy Gomez (Starboard) from Florida put on an impressive display to win through to the quarterfinals, as did Spain’s Iballa Moreno (Starboard), as both girls advanced.
While in the final heat of Round 3, it was once again Aline Adisaka from Brazil who dominated, followed by the young Vanina Walsh (Starboard) from Hawaii who has shown moments of brilliance in this event and continues to advance.
Above, Kody Kerbox (Naish) from Maui cracks off the lip. The competition will intensify in the morning, as we switch to man on man format for the remainder of the event and as it will come down to the wire for both Men’s and Women’s athletes here at the 2013 Huntington Beach Pro Grand Slam, presented by Starboard.
