Hukilau Beach Celebrations: A Community Gathering
Beyond the racing, the community of Laie is welcoming the paddling world to its treasured beach of Hukilau on the morning of the 11th for a unique get together showcasing the historical ties and community togetherness found in this special part of the world.
Hukilau Cafe will be providing breakfast for the athletes from 10am, as the local fishermen will bring the community together for a reenactment of the Hukilau, a traditional Hawaiian fishing practice that became so prevalent in this community that the beach adopted the name as its own.
The Iosepa voyaging Canoe will also be in the Bay for the festivities and will follow the athletes out on their journey down to Turtle Bay, adding to the excitement at the race start. The start for the race will be at 1.30pm.

As the racers and supporters arrive by land and sea to Turtle Bay, they will be greeted by a festive atmosphere at Turtle Bay, with food provided to athletes courtesy of Ola’s Restaurant, our host on the east side of Turtle Bay and Pacifico on site to celebrate the run with athletes and spectators alike. Ekolu Kalama will be playing live at the beach as a taster for his evening performance at Surfer the Bar.
Opening the evening at Surfer the Bar will be ‘Men in Grey Suits’ coming on at 7pm, leading to Ekolu’s featured performance at 9pm, with Pacifico beer specials all night.
There will also be a silent auction and raffle to benefit the North Shore Lifeguard Association featuring prizes such as boards, sunglasses, a night stay at Turtle Bay Resort and much more, so be there for your chance to win at Surfer the Bar on Saturday August 11th.
