(HALEIWA, OAHU, HAWAII) – For 33 years, the Hui O He’e Nalu has continuously perpetuated our Hawaiian values by keeping the ocean clean and being ocean-minded, or to Malama I Ke Kai (Cherish the Ocean). So we are proud to present the annual Da Hui Paddle Race, founded back in 1978 and presented this year by Xcel and Cool Air.
We will also be teaming up with Kona Red and the University of Hawai’i Cancer Center so we may Malama Ke Kino (Cherish Your Bodies). Being healthy and enjoying the spirit of Kanaloa is the main focus of this race.
Our 4 mile course is a favorite among novice competitors as a first race challenge, and among veterans for a quick sprint. In 2010, we had a record-breaking 502 competitors. With numerous age divisions – as young as 13 years and under – to the veteran 60+ age group, the race is designed to allow everyone the opportunity to test their ability, regardless of paddling experience.
Considered an “ohana-style” event, the ever-popular Parent/Child divisions in both paddleboard and stand up paddle divisions are for families looking to experience the race together.
And in keeping with our Hawaiian culture, the traditional all-wood board division is back. One of the most challenging divisions of all, boards must be solid wood – no hollow wooden boards are allowed.
An official race shuttle will be offered for the first time this year to both paddleboarders and SUP competitors. The race shuttle will take competitors and boards from Waimea Bay to Sunset Beach. A nominal shuttle fee applies; the first 12 reservations will be on the house on a first-come, first-serve basis.
