Carolina Cup Countdown

The Carolina Cup countdown is on, with festivities kicking off Wednesday, April 23 in Wrightsville Beach, N.C. One of the largest—and most exciting—events in SUP, the five-day extravaganza celebrates its fourth annual year with various clinics led by pro paddlers, an expo, and races for every skill level.

One of the great aspects of the annual Carolina Cup is that it offers something for everyone. If you’re not a racer, there’s endless gear to check out at one of the industry’s largest expos, tons of demos of the latest board designs, and non-competitive group paddles. This fourth year also includes a profusion of clinics—and we aren’t exaggerating by any means.

Throughout the Carolina Cup, Quikblade’s Jimmy Terrell will be teaching an advanced paddling clinic with World Champion Jamie Mitchell and Olympic gold-medalist Larry Cain, Lazy Dog will teach yoga training, and 2011 SUP Awards Female Paddler of the Year, Jenny Kalmbach, will hold a women’s clinic. Jamie Mitchell will also hold a prone paddleboard clinic, whitewater pro Dan Gavere and World Champ Danny Ching will each teach a paddling clinic, and Florida’s Bailey Rosen will hold a kids’ clinic. There are also NOCQUA night paddles, BBQs, an address by Hawaiian waterman Dave Kalama, an autograph session for you to geek out with the pros, and an awards ceremony.

Register here.

The racing side of the event will feature the usual races, including the 3.5-mile Harbor Island recreational race, the 6.5-mile Money Island open race, and the 13.2-mile Graveyard elite race. There will also be friendly competition for kids seven to 14 years old with the kids race (which will include appropriate age divisions) and the Ocean of Hope Cancer Awareness Paddle.

With over 400 paddlers in attendance for just the racing portion of the 2013 event, we’re sure this year will see even larger numbers, with even more excitement in each race. At the 2013 Carolina Cup, we saw some dramatic finishes as New Zealand’s Annabel Anderson and California’s Danny Ching took home victories ahead of an incredibly deep field of elite athletes from around the globe, including Jenny Kalmbach of Hawaii and European SUP Champion Eric Terrien of France. Other notable athletes at last year’s third annual event included California’s Brandi Baksic and Krisztina Zur, Florida’s Bailey Rosen, and Olivia Piana of France, as well as Aussie Jamie Mitchell, Florida’s Chase Kosterlitz, Ryan Helm of Mexico, and Matt Becker of California.
