Standup with Maddie and Hugh the manatee for humanity. For the Sake of Hugh Manatee – Maddie and Hugh's BIG Adventure, by Pete Hodgson and Dr. Udo Wahn (author of the Cabo and Coral book series), and art by Ron Croci, is available for purchase at, and the gift shop at the Ocean Institute in Dana Point, Calif. The inspiring story and beautifully illustrated book is geared for children between the ages of four and nine, and will compel children and families to take action for clean water.

For the Sake of Hugh Manatee tells the story of a little girl named Maddie and her friend Hugh, a manatee, as they discover the importance of keeping a healthy and clean water environment – valuable lessons that they learn at The Maddie James Seaside Learning Center. Together, they standup paddle upstream with their newfound knowledge and experience some of the problems affecting the watershed that are adversely impacting the ocean and its life forms.

The story begins at the Maddie James Seaside Learning Center, at The Ocean Institute in Dana Point, Calif., recognized for its hands-on marine science, environmental and ocean education and maritime history programs. The Center is named in memory of five-year-old Maddie James, who passed away due to an inoperable brain tumor in 2011. Maddie loved the ocean and considered the Ocean Institute her favorite place to visit. Kajsa James, mother of Maddie James, also contributed to the creation of the story. Partial proceeds of the book’s sale will be donated to The Maddie James Seaside Learning Center.
