A Date With the Strait

Sixth Annual POWER of the OCEAN to feature "A Date with the Strait" and "The Story of Ocean of Hope" on February 20 in Hermosa Beach, CA

What does dedication, inspiration and perseverance look like? Every paddling athlete knows. And so does every cancer patient. Ocean of Hope, which raises funds for the Sarcoma Alliance, will be hosting the sixth annual Power of Ocean fundraiser this Saturday, February 20, at the historic Hermosa Beach Playhouse Theatre.

Doors open at 6pm, and kicking off the evening will be the debut of "The Story of Ocean of Hope". This amazing documentary film by Gage Hingeley tells the story of a dedicated and determined team of paddlers who give themselves to the sea of people affected by cancer by training and racing in support of the Sarcoma Alliance. The Ocean of Hope team started in 1999 with one paddleboarder and has grown to include paddling events, prone and SUP paddleboarders, outrigger paddling teams and other athletes. Since its inception, Ocean of Hope has raised almost $800,000 for the Sarcoma Alliance and is still going strong.

Also on the ticket will be the South Bay movie premiere of "A Date with The Strait". The film follows the incredible story of three prone paddleboarders, Jack Bark (son of Joe Bark), Zeb Walsh and Brad Gaul, who braved the roughly 150 mile paddle through the Bass Strait between Southern Australia and Tasmania. The Bass Strait, one of the most treacherous bodies of water in the world, with its exposure to the Southern Ocean and shallow depths, routinely causes problems for sailors on even the largest vessels, let alone a paddleboard.

The Hermosa Beach Playhouse is located at 710 Pier Avenue in Hermosa Beach. Tickets are a $25 donation online at gofundme.com/oceanofhope, or $30 at the door. Your donation includes two films, craft beer from King Harbor Brewing Company and a raffle ticket for a grand prize giveaway.

Special thanks to King Harbor Brewing Company, Gage Hingeley Photography and Video, Mic Simpson Cinema, Red Bull, Patagonia, GoMacro Macrobars, INVIGORADE, Hermosa Beach Playhouse, Tarsan Stand-Up Paddle Boarding, Sarcoma Alliance and all of the Ocean of Hope team athletes for making this happen!
