The first big SUP race of the 2018 is in the books and when the dust settled, it was Australian Michael Booth and German powerhouse Sonni Hönscheid who were left standing atop the podium.
Booth survived a hard-fought battle in the closing stages of the 2018 Quiksilver Waterman Carolina Cup, outlasting late charges from Travis Grant and Mo Freitas after two hours and 13 miles of hard paddling around Wrightsville Beach on Saturday afternoon.
With the final three miles a full downwind leg this year, Booth was finally able to shake the fast duo and claim what he would call, "The biggest win of my career so far." Behind him, Grant was able to edge out Freitas to claim second place.
Meanwhile, Hönscheid looked unstoppable in her dominant victory over the women.
After Fiona Wylde took an early lead, the German paddler was able to reel her in and break away to paddle the final eight miles solo and finish three minutes ahead of the runner-up. That position belonged to Olivia Piana, who was able to track down Wylde in the closing stages and make the pass to finish second.
