Bay Bridge Paddle Preview

Mark your calendars, as the inaugural Bay Bridge Paddle is scheduled for Saturday, May 14th at Sandy Point State Park in Annapolis, Maryland. The first annual race off the Western Shore of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge is offering upwards of $7k in prize money and product prizes between its two competitive races, as well as a recreational course, and the opportunity to race among a variety of paddle craft in both a scenic and significant site.

Racing under what was once the world's longest continuous over-water steel structure and across the waters of the third-largest estuary in the world—with quickly changing conditions—will create a challenging and exciting 8.4-mile race on Chesapeake Bay for the Elite Crossing, which takes racers out past the Bay Bridge to the Eastern Shore, and back. Paddlers with less racing/paddling experience will also be able to participate in a shorter yet also challenging 5k race, while the 1.5k recreation course will be offered as a mellower paddle held closer to shore. Racing fees include breakfast and lunch as well as a commemorative event shirt.

Pre-race events kick off the evening before on Friday, May 13th, with two clinics at the race location, Sandy Point State Park. The first, an Introductory Clinic, is scheduled for 4 to 6pm. Aimed at new to intermediate paddlers, the clinic highlights general paddling fundamentals and race technique, while also giving a preview of the Bay Bridge Paddle racecourse and helpful information on paddling Chesapeake Bay. The two-hour course will be led by a trio of local SUP athletes and instructors Dawn Ehman Marohl, Kate Gove, and Shendan Grove (also the event director).
An Intermediate Clinic, presented by Capital SUP, will run from 5 to 7pm, led by SUP pro Jeramie Vaine. This class will include instruction on proper paddling technique and increasing efficiency, while taking you through a variety of technique drills on the water with Vaine.

In celebration of the upcoming inaugural event, Lahui Kai is offering a $200 discount off any board and free shipping from Included with the discounted purchase is a complimentary race training session with the team at Capital SUP to help you prepare for the big Bay Bridge Paddle.

The first annual event is set to be a fun-filled day with additional festivities beyond the racing, including board demos, water and land activites, as well as an awards ceremony. Proceeds from the inaugural Bay Bridge Paddle benefits Foundation for Community Betterment and the Maryland Special Olympics.
