Sunday morning a 15-year-old girl was standup paddling off of Catalina Island [miles off of the California coast,] when her board was bitten several times by a shark. The girl was paddling about 200 yards offshore with a group of friends when her board was attacked. The teen and her group were reportedly paddling about a mile from Avalon when the incident occurred. L.A. County Fire Department is calling the attack "extremely rare," although they are continuing to patrol the area. The type of shark has not yet been identified.
Of the 50 attacks that have been reported off the California coast in the last decade, only 4 have been fatal, reports the Shark Research Committee. Only one of those 50 shark attacks have taken place off of Catalina, which was in 2008 when a woman was kayaking and was ejected from her boat on the backside of the island.
