The turn of the new year came with a bit of startling news in the SUP world’s Instagram feeds, with three of the sport’s top professional athletes releasing posts to announce that they’ll be taking on 2018 with either new or no board sponsors.
New Years Day kicked off with an announcement from SUP’s most famous star, Kai Lenny (@kai_lenny) stating that he’s leaving Naish after 16 years spent riding for the brand, and today current APP World Champ Mo Freitas (@_mofreitas) shared the news that he’s leaving Focus SUP for a new, undeclared board sponsor in 2018.
But as surprising as any item in our Insta feeds so far this year was the announcement from 3x Women’s SUP Surfing World Champion Izzi Gomez (@izzigomez_) declaring that after five years and three world titles spent paddling for Team Starboard, she will not be riding starboard sleds in 2018. As to what boards she will be riding, we’re reaching out to dig up the dirt. We’ll keep you posted as details come in.
I just want to start by saying thank you to @starboardsup for believing in me since day 1. Starboard gave me the opportunity 5 years ago to join the team, travel the world and launch my career in SUP. I will always be forever grateful for the memories I've made and the experiences I've had with Starboard. That being said, I will be parting ways with Starboard. Again, thank you for everything. 🙏🏼 I'm really excited for this year, time to take on some new challenges!
