Canadians Sweep Surf to Sound Challenge

Despite challenging conditions, Canadian paddlers Tommy Buday and Jessica Rando swept the 6-mile Elite Championships at Saturday's North Carolina Surf to Sound Challenge in Wrightsville Beach. Rando, 2013 Surf to Sound Challenge Champion, defended her title amongst a strong field of competitors, while Buday overtook three-time defending champion Larry Cain for the win.

Surf to Sound conditions were probably the most difficult in the entire history of the race,” said John Beausang of Distressed Mullet. “We had very hard northeast winds, with a storm system moving in from the south. Not only did the winds increase, the temperature dropped. Navigating the inlet was very challenging, and the final leg to the finish line was very tough paddling into heavy winds.”

Tommy Buday and Larry Cain, both of Ontario, battled the entire distance for the coveted Elite Men’s division championship, switching up the lead three times over the course of the 6-mile race. In an extremely tight race to the end, Buday beached his board and ran to the finish less than a second ahead of Cain.

Hilarey Netsch of Kitty Hawk, NC, captured the Women’s Championship in the four-mile, Harbor Island Outer Loop, while Stephen Dees of Carolina Beach won the Men’s Championship in 14-foot category.

In the Women's 12'6 division, Rando also took her second victory of the weekend, racing to the finish only a half-second ahead of second place finisher April Zilg. Check out the results below.
