Ho’okipa, on Maui’s north shore, is one of the most famed watersports locales in the world, as surfers, windersurfers, kiters and standup paddlers all revel in its wind and waves.

Erik Aeder has made photographing Ho’okipa–somewhere between Maliko Gulch and the Kanaha Beach Park on the Maliko downwind run––his life’s work. During the Holidays, a legit swell slammed into Maui, lighting up Jaws. As surfing’s elite congregated at Peahi, Aeder photographed SUP’s elite enjoying a high-quality session at Ho’okipa (some of whom also charged Peahi). Here, Aeder runs us through his favorite playground and talks about the paddlers making it look good.
