Paddle Battling Cancer in Costa Rica
PADDLERS: Charlie Howden
This year, Charlie Howden set out on a SUP expedition with the goal of paddling Costa Rica’s entire Pacific coastline in effort to raise money for the William Guy Forbeck Research Fund (WGFRF). That may seem similar to other expeditions, but Howden’s story has a major twist. Howden himself has cancer – the same disease for which WGFRF does its research. When he first developed the idea for a Costa Rican quest, he was perfectly healthy with no signs of the stage-IV pancreatic cancer he was to be diagnosed with in August of 2013. When he was diagnosed, his purely philanthropic gesture became a personal calling. Charlie never questioned his commitment. He went for it, and while some sections of the coast proved too perilous for Charlie to endeavor in his state, he managed to paddle more than 200 miles of the coastline and raise nearly $15,000 in the fight against cancer.
