Welland, Ontario: Urban Paddle Guide

Welland, Ontario, Canada is a small city of 50,000 people that has an amazing body of water called the Welland Canal. It’s perfect for paddling! It can be hard on windy days, but mostly it is calm and a great place to bring your board.

This summer, the 2015 Pan Am Games canoe/kayak events will be held there in the canal’s beautiful setting. I love paddling there because it’s a unique spot that not a lot of people know about. There is easy access for parking as well as many docks along the canal to launch off of. The canal runs through downtown and along Merritt Island, which make the paddle relaxing but also a great place to train. The best part is paddling under three bridges!

Shop: Downtown Welland is known for its awesome farmers’ market! Saturday mornings are the best time to go there to get all the fresh fruit and veggies. Rent boards at Paddle Niagara.

Best places to eat in Welland I would say is Fireside, CC’s Dugout and M.T.Bellies.

Submitted by Madeline Leblanc. Leblanc is a teenager that lost two friends to cancer in 2011. She began a fundraiser in 2014 called On Board, which raised $4,000 for brain cancer research when she paddled 10km down the Welland Canal. Learn more about the 2015 event.
