Field Notes | How to Catch a Shark from a SUP | Virginia Beach

Somewhere in the abundantly populated waters off Sandbanks, Virginia Beach, these guys are perfecting the art of catch and release via SUP. They’re pulling up takers, including eel and black tip shark—not the most dangerous shark in the world, but far from harmless. Expertly they bring the massive fish onto their standup paddleboards, remove the hooks, turn the sharks on their backs (that’s where sharks are most docile), then toss them back into the drink. It’s textbook sport fishing and it’s all done from a couple of SUPs.
