Standup Paddle Touring In Breathtaking French Basque Country

As far as SUP destinations go, tropical locations (i.e. the Bahamas, Tahiti or Hawaii) always seem to be the perennial favorites among the paddling faithful. However, while white sand beaches and turquoise waters are hard to turn down, they are hardly the only choice when it comes to finding your paddling paradise. The world is filled with thousands of paddle-friendly destinations that are still waiting to be discovered, we just need to think beyond the island.

One such destination is located in the northwestern tip of France. Known among surfers for offering idyllic waves all along its coastline, the Basque region is less popular for its inland paddle offerings. But flatwater touring beauty abounds throughout the area. It may not be tropical, but it offers a spectacular paddling experience of its own. In this video, three friends enjoy a scenic paddle from a coastal city to the rural inland mountains. Their journey takes them past classic old buildings, picturesque wheat fields and a lush natural countryside. There are no big hotels or flashy yachts, just a simple natural beauty that all paddlers can appreciate. Even if the water isn’t 90 degrees year-round.

For another European SUP destination, explore the Italian city of Lignano, aka SUP City.
